Frequently asked Questions and Answers
What is Chinese Medicine?
Chinese Medicine views pain and illnesses as an external reflection of internal imbalances within the body. Acupuncture aims to correct these imbalances by regulating the flow of Qi-energy and blood, if their natural flow is interrupted or blocked, too strong or too weak.
What happens during the session?
After taking a detailed case history (including medical history, diet, sleep patterns, emotional state, etc) and checking the tongue coating and pulse, specific points will be chosen for the treatment, based on “the pattern” you present. The points can be located anywhere on the body. For example, stomach issues or toothaches may be treated with points on the foot. The acupuncturist will rotate or manipulate the needle to get a response like tingling, numbness and/or an electrical-like impulse from the chosen acupuncture point.
The patient rests with the needles in place for about 20-30 minutes. It is common for the patient to fall asleep and feel deeply relaxed and refreshed after the treatment.
If needed, the practitioner might add-on cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, reiki or acutaping and suggests naturopathic advice (diet, lifestyle, supplements and exercise).
How will I feel after the session?
Patients usually feel deeply relaxed and have a renewed feeling of energy and well being after the treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
As Acupuncture works holistically, a course of several treatments is often recommended to achieve maximum benefits, but it will depend on the nature of the condition and will be discussed during your first consultation.
Is it safe?
We only use sterilized and disposable needles which are individually sealed, used once and safely discarded. Unlike Western medicine, acupuncture is free from side-effects.
Does it cause bleeding?
The needles used are very fine and generally do not cause bleeding. Sometimes a small capillary may be punctured, leaving a tiny spot of blood and slight bruising may occur but this is no cause for concern.
Are there any side-effects?
Acupuncture restores the natural balance of the body and is free from side-effects. It treats the whole person at the root cause. The healing powers are awakened and stimulate the body to heal itself.
What are the benefits of Acupuncture?
Research has found that Acupuncture triggers the release of the body’s natural, pain relieving endorphins and serotonin, improving mood and encouraging the body to heal. Other benefits can include a heightened sense of well being and increased energy levels. By helping the body to repair itself, Acupuncture can help restore and maintain health and get you back on track. Acupuncture works well as a compliment to other forms of treatment or medication and is great as a preventative measure.
Brain imaging techniques have also shown inhibition of specific areas in the brain which are responsible for the perception of pain as a result of the insertion of acupuncture needles.
